Mission Statement, Goals, and Objectives

 The National Security/Homeland Security Commission provides the American Legion Family in the Department of Washington with current information and education on National Security and Homeland Security issues that will impact the State of Washington and the Nation to enable Legionnaires to be better prepared as citizens and in cases of emergencies and disasters.

Goals and Objective of National Security Commission

Goal 1:  To educate and inform Legionnaires of the National Security and Homeland Security issues relevant to the State of Washington and the Nation. 

Objectives:  

·         Develop a method of informing Department of Washington Legionnaires of current National and Homeland Security issues.

·         Review and update as necessary Commission structure to ensure all threats are addressed.

·         Recommend resolutions to forward to National to strengthen the National Defense and Homeland Security.

Goal 2:  To review and inform Legionnaires of National Security issues that may impact serving military services to ensure the strongest National Defense.

Objectives: 

·         Develop a knowledge base on issues that impact the quality of life for serving service members and their families.

·         Develop recommendations for issues and solutions that impact the quality of life for serving service members and their families to be forwarded to the Legislative Commission for legislative action.

Goal 3:  To provide Legionnaires within the Department of Washington the tools to prepare their families and to assist their communities in promoting awareness, preparedness, and response for man-made and natural disasters.

Objectives:  

·         Obtain and distribute disaster preparedness materials to Posts throughout the Department available from local, state and federal agencies.

·         Assist Posts in coordinating preparedness training for their members and families from local and county Emergency Management Offices.

Goal 4:  To act in liaison roles with local, state, and federal agencies so as to maintain the flow of vital information to Legionnaires, their families, and their communities in the event of an emergency or disaster.

Objective:  

·         Provide Legionnaires within the Department online training in the National Incident Management System, Incident Command System Courses, (I-100  - Introduction to the Incident Command System, I-200, Basic Incident Command System, and I-700, the National Incident Management System) to be better able to integrate into the response and recovery system.

Goal 5:  Maintain the visibility of The American Legion as a partner in prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery efforts from emergencies and disasters.

Objective:

·         Develop links with Washington Military Department, the active forces bases throughout the State, and with local and State Emergency Management agencies.

Goal 6:  To facilitate and encourage efforts to make Posts within the Department of Washington capable of responding to emergencies and disasters that may occur in their community or area. 

Objectives:  

·         Provide Legionnaires within the Department online training in the National Incident Management System, Incident Command System Courses, (I-100  - Introduction to the Incident Command System, I-200, Basic Incident Command System, and I-700, the National Incident Management System) to be better able to integrate into the response and recovery system.

·         Obtain and distribute disaster preparedness materials to Posts throughout the Department available from local, state and federal agencies.

·         Assist Posts in coordinating preparedness training for their members and families from local and county Emergency Management Offices.

·         Develop a template for Districts and Posts to use for developing their own disaster and emergency response plans.

 Members

The Department of Washington’s National Security / Homeland Security Commission is comprised of Legionnaires who recognize the critical national and homeland security needs of Washington State and its residents.  They bring a wealth of professional expertise, education, and other unique talents from across the State to serve their fellow Legionnaires in this capacity.  We are YOUR National Security / Homeland Security Commission.
